Lectures and textbooks provide an important aspect of education, but participating in hands-on research can transform knowledge into know-how. There are many research labs across Baylor’s campus in every college and school where undergraduate students contribute to impactful work. The examples below illustrate the breadth of these learning opportunities:
Sleep Neuroscience & Cognition Laboratory – Under principal investigator and Associate Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience, Michael K. Scullin, Ph.D., students work as research assistants (RAs) along with a team of faculty, Ph.D. candidates, post-docs and graduate students. RAs complete in-depth training and contribute regularly to data collection, data entry and more. The research has discovered numerous connections between the benefits of healthy sleep for people of all ages, including studies specifically looking at sleep habits of college students. In addition, RAs have contributed to data analysis and interpretation, conference presentations and even to developing and conducting independent projects. Some also have contributed to published book chapters or journal articles and won university or national awards based on their work.
Phage Lab - Each fall, a group of first-year biology students is selected to participate in biomedical research through the SEA-PHAGES program, supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Under the mentorship of Tamarah L. Adair, Ph.D., senior lecturer in biology, students isolate and analyze bacteriophages from local soil samples, using bioinformatics tools to sequence and annotate genomes. This hands-on research experience not only advances scientific understanding of bacteriophages and their potential in combating antibiotic resistance but also opens doors for students to engage meaningfully in the scientific community. Earlier this year, the work of the 2022-23 and 2023-24 students culminated in an article published by the American Society for Microbiology.
Interventions in Dementia (ID) Lab - This undergraduate-operated clinical research lab is dedicated to implementing therapeutic interventions designed to improve quality of life outcomes for memory care patients. Directed by Richard Sanker, Ph.D., senior director of pre-health, in partnership with Ascension Providence Village, ID provides memory care patients with personalized music performances to mitigate the effects of common mood disorders.
Limnology and Aquatic Biogeochemistry Lab – Focused on discovering ways to mitigate challenges that diminish water quality and supply, this lab led by Thad Scott, PhD. professor of biology, integrates students into the daily advancement of key research. From water collection to testing and analysis, students apply their diverse skills to understand environmental, biological and atmospheric impacts on lakes and rivers and build their experience toward their own future careers. For faculty, it is an important way to mentor future scientists who will continue this important work.
